XianXian is Lan Zhan’s husband/soulmate/lover/boyfriend. Sounds more elegant in Chinese for some reason. lol

I am very happy that the CQL/陳情令 used “畢生知己” (longtime confidant or soulmate). It is very difficult for an actual one-to-one counterpart for “知己,” but we get the idea. “藍顏知己” literally is a husband or lover so it would much too obvious to be used in CQL. hehe Either way it is a confession from Wei Ying to Lan Zhan. 😍

I think the first time I ever hear “紅粉知己,” which is the female counterpart of “藍顏知己,” was from TVB series, Ancient Heroes (隋唐群英會). I probably gave away my age, I grew up watching their series. lol A good example is 李靖 (Li Jing) and 紅佛女 (Hong Fu Nu) from this series.

As badass of a lady that Hong was (skilled in martial arts and dance), she was not confident of how Li felt about her. They have been through thick and thin. Both of them loved and cared for one another deeply, but on the surface, it felt like a normal friendship. Everyone is very reserved during ancient time and would not outright say their feelings. It wasn’t until their older sworn brother (虯髯客) gave them a push. When Hong questioned Li and would abandon the subject forever if such a spark never existed, he said “紅粉知己” without any restraints. That was a confession?!! Then, they lived happily married afterwards.

BTW, if anyone is interested, the three of them are named 風塵三俠 (The Three Heroes) as a group and sort of like Robinhood of their time, quite famous in historical fiction when it comes to who helped Tang Gaozu and Taizong rise in power and established the great Tang Dynasty. There’s a number of TV series about them like Grand Canal, Heroes of Sui and Tang Dynasties, Romance of Red Dust, etc. Li Jing definitely existed, he is documented as one of most prominent generals of Tang, not sure about the other two though.

Going back to CQL, if Chinese censorship did not exist, would the scriptwriters use “藍顏知己? “

I am still in the works of reading the novel, quite curious of what 墨香銅臭 ( MXTX) used in MDZS.
