Sakurai Sho plays lead role in Kobe earthquake documentary

Arashi’s Sho Sakurai (27) will play the lead role in a documentary drama special about the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. The program is tentatively titled “Hanshin-Awaji Daishinsai Kara 15 Nen: Kobe Shimbun no Nanokakan ~Hisaichi ni Ikita Kishatachi no Tatakai~” and will air on Fuji TV next year.

Also known as the “Kobe earthquake,” the massive earthquake struck the southern Hyogo prefecture on January 17, 1995 and resulted in more than 6,400 casualties. The drama will focus on the reporters working for the Kobe Shimbun, who were determined to keep the newspaper running without interruption, despite the damage suffered during the earthquake.

The characters in the drama will all be based on real people, using their real names. Sakurai stars as the photo reporter Tomohiko Mitsuyama, who had joined Kobe Shimbun four years before the earthquake. The show will also have documentary segments such as interviews, including an appearance by Mitsuyama himself.

Fuji TV will broadcast the show in January 2010, which will be the 15th anniversary of the earthquake.

I’m looking forward to this docudrama, it’s always interesting to learn more about actual events that had occurred. From my readings, the Kobe earthquake was quite a intense one with a magnitude of 7.2. I recall reading somewhere that Sho-kun clearly recalls this, it was the same year that he had joined Johnny’s.

Sakurai Sho to be starring in the 2nd season of The Quiz Show

Wow, this is mecha awesome. The Spring Jdrama lineup looks so promising, first it was Jun-kun and now Sho-kun will be starring in a drama. It’s going to one hot April! Now if Aiba-chan does one, it will make this season even more perfect. We can only hope.

Arashi’s Sho Sakurai has been chosen to star in the NTV drama series “The Quiz Show.” The show is a prime time version of last summer’s late night drama “The Quiz Show,” which starred Jin Katagiri and Shigeyuki Totsugi.

In the new version, Sakurai plays the host of a live TV quiz program. On the show, contestants who achieve 7 correct answers win 10 million yen, and those who get 8 correct answers will have one of their wishes granted by the TV network. But while the questions start off innocently enough, as the game progresses, the questions gradually delve into the contestants’ past crimes or indiscretions, presenting them with the dilemma of having to confess their guilt in order to win.

Sakurai’s character also has a mysterious past. Before becoming the show’s host, an accident had left him in a vegetative state for six years, which also resulted in him losing most of his memories.

The supporting cast includes Kanjani8’s Yu Yokoyama as the show’s director, Aya Matsuura as a rookie assistant director, and Miki Maya as the producer. Broadcast begins on April 18 in NTV’s Saturday 9pm time slot.

You’re surprised too, ne? Since Yatterman was just released, I would think he would give acting a rest and concentrate on his newscasting and variety shows. I guess not, it’s a good thing for us fan, haven’t seen him on the small screen in a long time. Don’t work too hard though, Sho-kun!!

The plot to The Quiz Show sounds so interesting and feels very suspenseful. I like the mysterious part of Sho-kun’s character, quite different from his other roles. I’m even more excited now!
